Victory! Gopher free! The garden is thriving. Eating squash regularly, cherry and regular tomatos are progress well. Weather has been very cool and overcast until yesterday and today. Great sunshine the past 2 days. Progress pictures will be loaded in the next day or so.

Winning the battle? Well the gophers have not left any traces for the past week so.... maybe... they are gone for now. We shall see. Planted some Turkish hot peppers behind the arugala and red bell peppers in front of the row of tomatos along the fence. The squash is producing nicely with about 4 or so small squash - 2 times a week. We pick them small and steam them. Here are a couple of pictures taken today.
Here's a picture of the corner.

Well, we have not had anymore plants dissappear to the gophers this week but there is still some evidence that they are in the yard. So the battle is not over yet. I check the yard morning and evening and put some poison into their holes when they appear. Here is a current garden picture with some links to others following the picture.

Did some weeding this evening. No gopher evidence so maybe we are ok for now! Will have 2 or more squash by tomorrow or Saturday. Weather for the past 2 days has been overcast and in the low 70's. It's the June gloom for Lompoc:-)

Dang gophers - I guess they are not all gone. They've eaten the roots off the squash just as the squash has begun to produce. I picked the first squash today. We noticed drooping on the plants yesterday. Pulling one of them up showed the roots are missing. - back to the war on gophers!! gopher.bmp

Well, we are back from our Yosemite vacation and the garden has really taken off! I'm amazed at how much things have grown. The weather has been warm and the garden was well cared for by our daughter who carefully watered the squares as needed. The traces of gophers have gone for now so between the deep hole poison and the vibrating sticks in the ground we have been able to at least hold them at bay. Here is one picture of the garden and below it are links to other pictures taken this afternoon.
